Two Fully Funded PhD Opportunities in Bioinspired Engineering at LSBU

02/05/2025

We are delighted to announce two exciting PhD positions in the Mechanical Intelligence (MI) Research Group, starting in September 2025. These projects offer a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of biology and engineering, applying cutting-edge bioinspired design to tackle real-world challenges in sustainability, healthcare, and technology. Each PhD studentship includes a tuition fee waiver for four years, including the write-up year. (Please note: these studentships do not include a living stipend; applicants must be able to cover their living costs independently.)

PhD Projects

1. Decoding Damage Tolerance in Insect Wings: A Path to Biomimetic Engineering :

Explore how insect wings withstand damage without catastrophic failure and use these insights to design lightweight, resilient engineering structures. This project bridges biomechanics, materials science, and mechanical engineering.

2. Adaptive Bioinspired Drones for Nanogrid Installation, Monitoring, and Inspection :

Develop a new generation of adaptive drones inspired by insect flight. These drones will support renewable energy systems by enabling silent, efficient operations in complex and constrained environments. For more information, please get in touch with us .
